A new primary bank for the Tax Administration and Benefits Department in 2026

The Government of the Netherlands uses the services of banks for its payment services. Recently, the Ministry of Finance executed a public procedure for the payment services of the Tax Administration, Benefits Department and Customs Administration of the Netherlands. The public procedure has resulted in the selection of two banks: Rabobank and ING Bank. Noteworthy is that the execution of the assignment has been granted in two parts.

Rabobank will execute the payment services of the Tax Administration and the Benefits Department as of the 1st of May 2026. ING Bank will execute the payment services of the Customs Administration as of the 1st of May 2026. Splitting the execution of these services comes with several important advantages as both banks serve as stand-by for each other. As a result, both banks are able to replace the services of each other when this is necessary or preferable. This may be necessary in exceptional situations such as long-lasting IT-failures at one bank.

No changes until the 1st of May 2026

The Tax Administration and Benefits Department will communicate actively about the primary bank change and what this entails for citizens, companies and other stakeholders. This will be done before and after the announced bank switch.

The payment services of the Tax Administration, the Benefits Department and the Customs Administration are extensive. These payment services include for example,  the payout of benefits and the collection of taxes. Periodically these payment services are procured again.
